Favorite Documentary: 4 Little Girls

A very powerful and moving story about race relations in the South and how it inadvertently took the lives of four innocent girls in Birmingham, Alabama. The thing I have always admired about this documentary is that…it’s not a history lesson. You start out thinking it’s going to be strictly about the Civil Rights Movement and just the crime involved.

Spike Lee made the documentary about the 4 LITTLE GIRLS. He showed what their lives were like, the activities they were involved in, the friends they had, schools attended, and family life. He placed all of the evil going at that time in the background and gave the actual bombing only 6 mins of attention throughout the entire documentary, because the bombing is NOT the important part of the story.

When you hear or read about things like the Holocaust, Slavery or events like the 16th Street Church bombing, you’ll never truly appreciate or relate to them unless you get an intimate and personal view of what actually happened. Looking at these girl’s lives and knowing that they were each INDIVIDUALS; someone’s daughter, granddaughter, niece, friend, sister, or classmate. AND NOT just “Four little girls” killed in a church bombing, as they are always shown. Seeing how it affected their parents, siblings, their community, and the world is life changing. Then you can understand the scope of the bigger problem and how we should never take things for granted.
